make room

Make Room (2017-2019) is a video installation that aims to highlight the artificiality behind the neoliberal constructions of Miami. The title is a reference to Walter Benjamin’s The Destructive Character.  “The destructive character knows only one watchword: make room. And only one activity: clearing away. His need for fresh air and open space is stronger than any hatred.” In this case, the city is making room for the “young professionals who enjoy our active, urban core filled with cultural and entertainment options all within our legendary tropical setting” (an excerpt from the Miami Downtown Development Authority). The use of high-key imagery is emblematic of Benjamin’s characterization of the destructive character as young and cheerful, for “destroying rejuvenates in clearing away the traces of our own age.” The video is filled with appropriated imagery from Google Maps, the Miami-Dade Property Appraiser website, the Downtown Development Authority website, demolition videos from YouTube, and stock and archival video footage of the city.
